Notes on software, systems, engineering, and things

What's all this about?

A pen drawing of me

I've had a lot of blogs over the past twenty-odd years. For a long time I kept every post, moving them from one blog to the next each time I rebuilt. These days that doesn't matter much. With the advent of AI, an archive of old posts isn't really the point any more.

What I do now is write posts for myself, but in public, in case they help another human. I use AI to help write them. The projects and the content are mine.

Why use AI? These fingers have been typing for almost thirty years. I've spent a lot of that time, at a computer and at a typewriter, fashioning the right words. These days nobody really reads properly. We all summarise with AI. So spending hours on every sentence doesn't make much sense any more.

I make no claims about it, and I don't really care whether people are happy or unhappy that some of my posts are written with AI. I exist simply to create and tinker, and this is my place for it. You're welcome to read along and take what's useful.

How I write

I often dictate, talking an idea through and having that turned into writing, and other times I type the ideas out myself, but either way I then change the sentences and the prose with AI, often by speaking again. I'm still the author, it's just assisted now, and I enjoy doing it this way. I know some people don't like this, but I don't really care about that. Sorry.

Engineering

I've been a software engineer since the millennium, and after more than two decades of it I don't write any code myself any more. I'm a creative engineer who loves both the process and the end result, which is why I love using AI: it means I can be more ambitious, make more things and enjoy the process more in the free time I've got. I'm not really on social media any more either, because the world's becoming a depressing place, so I'm just going to enjoy my little corner of it, building and making things. There's more on why in my philosophy.
